WALKER RACES TO RUNNER-UP RESULT IN SWEDEN
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jonny Walker has ended the 2018 FIM SuperEnduro World Championship on a high note, claiming the runner-up result at the final round of the season in Sweden. Adding to his podium result on the night, Walker also won the Akrapovic SuperPole award for the third time.
With Lidköping playing host to the fifth and final round of the 2018 series, Walker looked to add to his podium results obtained at the previous two rounds in Malaga and Bilbao, Spain. Gelling well with the course layout in Sweden, Walker looked strong and confident in practice. Entering the night’s racing leading the Akrapovic SuperPole standings, he was keen to win it for the third time. With some slight breathing room in the point’s standings he set the second fastest time to clinch the coveted award.
Moving into the night’s three races, Jonny didn’t enjoy the best of starts in race one. From mid-pack he was able to fight his way up the leaderboard to an eventual fifth. Despite another poor start in the reversed order race two, the KTM rider was quick to cut his way through the field, crossing the finish line in fourth.
In contention for a podium result, Walker started his final race of the series in determined fashion. Battling his way to the sharp end of the results, he carded a strong third place. With an ever-improving 5-4-3 results, plus his additional two points from SuperPole, Walker closed out his SuperEnduro season as runner-up.
With the FIM SuperEnduro World Championship complete, Walker now looks forward to the opening round of the World Enduro Super Series at Extreme XL Lagares in Portugal on May 11-13.
Jonny Walker: “It feels great to end the SuperEnduro series on the second step of the podium here in Sweden. Winning the Akrapovic SuperPole award for the third time is also an added bonus. I felt tonight I wasn’t riding my best but I was able to make the best of a tough night. I wasn’t the fastest on track, but I was able to find lines where others couldn’t and put in a consistent ride for the overall runner-up result. Overall, it’s been a season of learning. Getting injured before the start of the series didn’t help at all – things didn’t start out too good at round one in Poland but I worked hard to improve. A podium result at round three certainly helped to turn my fortunes around and at the final three rounds I finished as runner-up each time out. Looking forward I’m excited to now focus on the upcoming World Enduro Super Series that begins at Extreme XL Lagares in May.”
