Steve Holcombe has continued his positive start to the 2017 EnduroGP World Championship, successfully completing two challenging days of racing at the GP of Spain. Runner-up in the EnduroGP class on day one, on day two Steve was locked in a day-long battle for victory with Matt Phillips and Christophe Nambotin and eventually finished third, just 1.17 seconds from the top step of the podium.
In hugely contrasting conditions to the series opener in Finland, round two of the series saw riders battle against extreme dust both on the special tests and the long and technical trails in and around the host town of Puerto Lumbreras. Talking no risks during the short Friday night super test, Holcombe put in a solid performance during day one, topping three special tests, placing as runner-up and just 2.42 seconds behind winner Phillips. Determined to improve on his result, on day two Steve made an impressive start by winning the opening extreme and enduro tests. Continuing to perform well throughout the day, two small mistakes on the second extreme test ultimately denied him the chance of the day win. Nevertheless, in finishing just over one-second from the top of the podium he showed impressive speed and consistency.
Steve now sits second in the EnduroGP championship standings, just eight points behind leader Matt Phillips. Steve Holcombe: “When you’re fighting for the class win it’s hard to be anything but pleased with the way things have gone. And I’m really pleased with my results here in Spain. I’m a little frustrated that I was so, so close to getting my first win of the championship on day two, but it was awesome to be fighting with Matt and Christophe. For me that’s what it’s all about – close racing against guys that are giving it absolutely everything to win. I wasn’t really sure what my speed would be like in such dry and dusty conditions, but everything worked out great. My bike didn’t miss a beat throughout the weekend and apart from a few small mistakes I felt like my riding was where it needed to be too. We’re only two rounds into the series now, but I feel like we’re in a great place. All things considered it’s been a really positive weekend.”
