“The CF Racing Tough 100 Extreme enduro took place last Saturday and Sunday and wow! Did it live up to its name, this was the 2nd edition of the event from Steve Ireland and his band of superb lieutenants at WOR Events, the organisers had said in some prerace event info that they had upped the ante for this year’s race, they were not wrong as they provided a fantastic 10 mile lap of mixed mountainous terrain that was littered with challenge after challenge along the way. The biggest challenge however was the rain that descended on the already impressively tough track right from the drop of the start flag to the finish of the race 5 hrs later!
The Tough 100 had a 2-hour qualifier race on the Saturday evening from 7pm till 9pm, this was set in superb sunshine on a nice 5-mile loop that still offered some nice technical sections through the streams and valleys of the amazing venue the race was set in. David Knight(KTM) and his Brother Juan (GASGAS) where on top form as was Sherco mounted Luke Flack taking the spoils at the sharp end of the qualifier. Last year’s Tough 100 winner, Charlie Frost missed the start due to travelling issues and started dead last, over 7 minutes behind everyone, he pushed hard to take a last lap dash to make the coveted front row start places. Dusk fell on the massive paddock as riders fettled machines to get ready for the 9:30am start of the massive challenge that lay ahead the next morning.
The TOUGH 100 format is simple, 10 laps of a 10 mile track makes 100 miles of Tough Riding, the first rider to complete that gets the chequered flag, the time allowance for all riders is 5hrs. David Knight achieved this feat in 4 hours and 2 minutes on a ride and pace that was unbelievable considering how wet, slippery and difficult the circuit had become. Multi World enduro champion Knight looked superhuman as he destroyed the opposition from the start and fully deserved his plaudits as the New T100 champion. It would be hard to envisage any other rider on the planet matching some of the speed and displays of skill that the Manxman made the 300 2t KTM perform, simply superb.
Always a challenge to his brother was Juan Knight showing again his smooth and almost effortless style would be enough to place him right up there as Runner Up. Juan was debuting the 2018 Gas Gas 300 and the two seemed an ideal match for each other from the outset, at the end David had a 19-minute advantage over Juan. Sherco Mounted Luke Flack was on fire and his 3-rd. place was totally deserved as he had a lot of the spectators talking about his speed and ability on the 250f. Flack, after having had a break from the sport seamlessly stepped back into pace that’s needed to run at the front of these races and is one to watch progress in the near future. Luke was 10 minutes adrift of Juan Knight after 4 and a half hours of riding. Aled Price (KTM) and Gary Jenkins (Sherco) where the only other Expert riders to hit Gold on the 10-lap challenge.
Grant Thompson from the IOM was top Clubman and raced hard with Clubman Runner Up, Brad Lilburn to take Gold places on 10 laps each. Those two putting in a stonking pair of rides with a superb 6th and 7th overall. Expert class for those boys next year and deservedly so. 3rd placed Clubman was Connor Bolsover, whom did exceptionally well in his first ever Extreme race to also finish 9th overall on a 9-lap silver.
The Clubman Vets class was topped by Pete Bailey on his Husqvarna with Richard Lewis as the only other finisher in class. Bailey on 7 laps, Lewis on 6 with both riders going the distance.
One rider deserves a very special mention, Curtis Grose, a young 14-year-old from the IOM, won the always competitive Sportsman group, on an 85cc Husky!! That Island certainly breeds top riders and this young man is certainly one to watch out for climbing the ranks in future events. He was pushed hard though by the determination of Runner Up, another impressive youth rider, Matthew Mills. Mills was 1 minute behind after a 5hr battle. 3rd Sportsman place made a full podium of young upcoming riders as the impressive Charlie Goddard continues his improvement with every event as he also completed 7 laps.
The Novice group had some very brave riders out there that were prepared to tackle everything that the event could throw at them. Jason Mcbeth finished as winner but maybe should have entered the Sportsman or Clubman classes as he put in a stonking ride showing he can do it on 2 wheels as well as four, Mcbeth is a good Quad Enduro rider. Runner Up Novice was Santino Morgan with Nigel Lynn from the Properly Protected WOR insurance partners fully deserving his 3rd spot.
This event was how a multy lap Extreme Enduro should be presented, executed and delivered, IT WAS BRUTAL!! and the riders could not thank or praise Steve Ireland and the WOR team enough, even DNF riders that had still fully enjoyed the challenge. The rain most definitely played its part in making this Tough 100 Tougher and the sheer volume of spectacular dismounts and rider fails along with the speed of the “Knighter” made for compelling viewing for the spectators. A massive pat on the back to all the riders for taking part and a huge well done to the pioneers of Extreme in Enduro in the UK, WOR Events for yet another addition to their list of Extreme Enduro Productions.
WOR would like to thank once again everybody who makes these events possible, from landowners, staff, medics, Sponsors, event partners and the most important one, the Riders for trusting in the events and making them happen.
The event will be on Digital TV channel, Front runner from Blood Sweat and gears soon.
